Seasonal Fevers: Understanding, Preventing, and Treating Them

Hi all,

The present fever season is baffling. It has been almost four months and still the rush has not settled down.

Some of the tips I would advise:

  1.  Please eat healthy balanced food rich in vitamins and minerals. It will definitely boost your immunity and protect you from getting severe infections. Also preferably warm food as viruses flourish in cold and stale food.
  2. Drink plenty of oral fluids, preferably juices, coconut water , butter milk etc. Helps in curbing the dehydration caused by these viral infections.
  3. I have come across many patients who have been self medicating with over the counter medicine. They come to medical attention on the 4th or 5th day. One patient came after 10 days with lots of aggravation in symptoms. He turned out to be suffering from Dengue and platelets were low. It is always advisable to meet with your doctor as soon as possible to avoid serious complications.
  4. Not all patients need hospitalization. 80% of them can be managed on OPD basis and recover at home.
  5. These fevers that we are encountering now a days are sometimes having mixed features. Dengue with Malaria/ Typhoid with Dengue etc. This season is best for breeding of mosquitoes. Please take care of your family from mosquitoes.
  6. Wash your hands regularly and use sanitizers. Avoid touching nose or mouth etc frequently and wash your hands accordingly. Avoid contact with people who are already suffering from viral infections.
  7. It is not COVID- not dangerous but causes morbidity. In spite of this, if you still get the symptoms- contact your doctor immediately.
